Shire has announced a voluntary recall of one lot of Pentasa 250mg capsules due to two pharmacies reporting the discovery of five Pentasa 500mg capsules in a stock bottle of Pentasa 250mg.
The affected product has the Lot #AE7363A with an expiration date of 06/19. The product is supplied in 240-count bottles.
Pentasa (mesalamine), an aminosalicylate, is indicated for the induction of remission and for the treatment of patients with mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis. It is supplied in 250mg and 500mg strengths with 240 and 120 capsules, respectively.
The recall notice states that based on the pharmacology of the product the potential concern of overdose and impact to patients is considered minimal, although clinicians are urged to refer to the prescribing information for Pentasa if their is a concern for possible toxicity symptoms (ie, salicylate toxicity).
