Abbott is initiating a voluntary recall of certain Similac brand (including Isomil and Go & Grow), milk- and soy-based powder infant formulas after an internal quality review detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility. The FDA has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, infants who consume the affected formula may experience symptoms of gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a healthcare provider should be consulted.

At least 12 of the recalled products were distributed to families through the federal government’s Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) health and nutrition program. The recalled powder infant formulas include:
- Certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers
- Certain Similac powder product lines offered in 8oz, 12.4oz, and 12.9oz cans
Products not affected by this recall include all Abbott Nutrition liquid ready-to-feed and concentrated infant formulas and all powder and liquid specialty formulas (eg, Similac Expert Care, Alimentum, Elecare, Similac Expert Care Neosure, Similac Human Milk Fortifier, and metabolic formulas for inherited disorders).
