Altaire Pharmaceuticals announced a voluntary recall of nine lots of Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium 0.5% Ophthalmic Solution, 30mL. This recall is a result of mold complaints found in the bottles after use and concerns regarding the efficacy of the preservative after use and handling of the product.

Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Ophthalmic Solution is an over-the-counter (OTC) drug product used to relieve dryness of the eye and is packaged in a plastic bottle inside a unit box.
The full list of affected products can be found on the firm press release. The recalled lots were distributed between February 2012 and April 2013. The products were sold nationwide at retail stores such as CVS, Wal-Mart, and Target.
A product whose preservative may not be effective could lead to the use of a contaminated product, which places the consumer at a potential risk for eye infection. Consumers who have any of the affected products should stop use of the product immediately.
