The FDA is warning consumers to not buy or use Thorne Research’s Captomer or Captomer-250 currently marketed as a dietary supplement for heavy metal toxicity and heavy metal chelation therapy.

Captomer and Captomer-250 list DMSA as an active ingredient. DMSA is contained in a prescription product indicated for the treatment of lead poisoning in children. Consumers are warned to avoid any over-the-counter (OTC) products for chelation or detoxification because there are no FDA-approved OTC chelation products. These procedures should only be performed with medical supervision.

Approved chelating agents are available by prescription only and are approved for specific uses such as lead poisoning and iron overload. Thorne Research announced the voluntary recall of these products.
