The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning that homeopathic teething tablets and gels may pose a risk to infants and children. Consumers are recommended to stop using these products and discard any in their possession.
If a child experiences seizures, difficulty breathing, excessive sleepiness, muscle weakness, skin flushing, constipation, difficulty urinating, or agitation following use of homeopathic teething tablets, consumers should seek medical attention immediately. Parents and caregivers should consult healthcare professionals for safe alternatives to homeopathic teething tablets and gels.
After the FDA’s safety alert regarding homeopathic teething tablets in 2010, the Agency has been evaluating reported adverse events related to use of these products such as seizures. The FDA is continuing to investigate the issue and testing product samples.
Homeopathic teething tablets and gels are distributed by CVS, Hyland’s, and others and sold in retail stores and online. These products have not been evaluated nor approved by the FDA for safety or efficacy, and the Agency is not aware of any proven health benefit by using these products.
