Abbott announced a recall for the FreeStyle Blood Glucose Meter and the FreeStyle Flash Blood Glucose Meter due to the possibility of producing mistakenly low blood glucose results when used with the Abbott FreeStyle test strips.

The company recommends that consumers with the recalled meters immediately contact Abbott Diabetes Care to receive a replacement meter. If using the affected meter, consumers are recommended to take the following precautions to reduce the chance of a false reading:

  • Perform a quality control solution test to confirm proper meter function
  • Do not use a test strip vial if control solution results are not within the expected range
  • Contact a healthcare provider if blood glucose result(s) are not consistent with diabetes history, current status or if results seem inaccurate

Consumers that use the OmniPod Insulin Management System with the built-in FreeStyle Blood Glucose Meter are to refer to the Abbott’s previously sent letter of recommended actions. The affected meters have not been in production since 2010.

This recall does not apply to the other FreeStyle brand glucose monitoring systems: FreeStyle Lite, FreeStyle Freedom Lite or FreeStyle InsuLinx systems.
