Test Detects MRSA/SA Infections in About an Hour
Cepheid announced it has received clearance from the FDA to market its Xpert MRSA/SA Blood Culture test for the detection of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Staphylcocccus aureus (SA).
Physicians commonly order a set a blood culture bottles drawn from patients that present with symptoms of systemic infections. Positive cultures can appear within 16–24 hours but identifying the specific organism can require an additional 24-48 hours.
The Xpert MRSA/SA Blood Culture test processes positive blood culture specimens to determine if a patient's blood is infected with MRSA or SA in about one hour. This allows de-escalation from broad-spectrum therapy to a specific antimicrobial approach sooner than the traditionally slower culture methods.
The Xpert MRSA/SA Blood Culture test runs on the GeneXpert System and is available for immediate shipment in a 10-test kit.For more information call (408) 541-4191 or visit www.cepheid.com.
