Combe announced the availability of Preventeza (levonorgestrel) tablet 1.5mg, a new emergency contraceptive for the prevention of pregnancy.

Preventeza can be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex or contraceptive failure although it is most effective the sooner it is taken. Levonorgestrel, a progestin, works by mainly blocking the release of an egg from the ovary and may also work by preventing fertilization of a released egg or the implantation of a fertilized egg to the uterus.

Preventeza does not protect against HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases. It should not be used for regular birth control. It is not effective if the user is already pregnant and will not affect an existing pregnancy.

Preventeza is available as a single 1.5mg strength tablet and can be purchased online or over-the-counter (OTC).
