Mediterranean Diet + Olive Oil - Diabetes

The Mediterranean diet has been shown to have many health benefits, and new research is adding to that list. In a subgroup of 3,451 participants in a multicenter trial in Spain, those who were assigned to a Mediterranean diet plus extra virgin olive oil saw a 40% relative reduction in diabetes risk compared to the control group. Participants assigned to a Mediterranean Diet plus mixed nuts saw an 18% reduction. There were only slight changes to body weight, waist circumference, and physical activity among all three groups, which points to the diet as the catalyst for the diabetes risk reduction.
