Ethicon announced the launch of Surgicel Powder Absorbable Hemostat (oxidized regenerated cellulose [ORC]), a new adjunct therapy to help control disruptive bleeding more efficiently when ligation or other conventional methods of control are impractical or ineffective.

Surgicel Powder is designed to address continuous, broad-surface oozing to quickly stop the bleeding in as little as 30 seconds. It contains an aggregate of ORC fiber fragments that work on the capillary, venous, and small arterial hemorrhages. As it penetrates to the source of bleeding, the hemostat provides a matrix for platelet adhesion and aggregation. Surgicel Powder has demonstrated bactericidal activity in vitro against 5 hospital-acquired pathogens: MRSA, MRSE, VRE, PRSP, and E. coli
