What is the Bourbon Virus?
Health officials are reporting that a newly discovered virus has been linked to the death of a Kansas resident earlier this year. Coined the Bourbon virus for the county where the patient was residing, the virus led to symptoms including fever and fatigue in the patient; it is not known how much the virus contributed to this death.
This is the only confirmed case of infection from the Bourbon virus and no specific vaccine or treatment for the disease has been identified. Because it is believed that the virus is transmitted through tick or insect bites, the risk of contracting the virus is low in the winter but officials still recommend using precautions outdoors for avoiding tick- and insect-borne illnesses like using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves and pants.
