A Little Activated Charcoal With Your Juice?
Medicinal activated charcoal is often used for the treatment of acute poisoning, overdose, and digestive issues, but it's now promoted as a "detoxifying" ingredient in a new line of cold-pressed juices. Juice Generation has unveiled three cold-pressed juices that also contain two teaspoons of activated charcoal sources from heated coconut shells; each 16oz bottle retails for $9.95.
Juice Nation states that the product can "draw toxins out of your body for improved organ function," but has declined to provide research to support these claims. Experts say that there's little evidence that charcoal can improve breath, digestion, and skin or aid in hangover relief and it may actually bind to nutrients as well as toxins. Until research can back these boastful benefits, charcoal-infused juice could just be a pricey placebo.
