Xyzal Allergy 24HR (levocetirizine dihydrochloride; Chattem) is now available as an over-the-counter (OTC) treatment of symptoms associated with seasonal and year-round allergies. Symptoms include runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, sneezing, and itching of the nose or throat.
Until the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s approval in February 2017, Xyzal was available only as a prescription drug. Xyzal Allergy 24HR is recommended for use in patients aged ≥6 years. The Children’s Xyzal Allergy 24HR oral solution is recommended for use in patients aged ≥2 years.
Xyzal, an antihistamine, works via selective inhibition of H1 receptors. The antihistaminic activity of levocetirizine has been documented in a variety of animal and human models.
Xyzal Allergy 24HR is available as 5mg strength tablets in 10-, 35-, 55-, and 80-count bottles. Children’s Xyzal Allergy 24HR is available as 2.5mg/5mL strength oral solution in a tutti frutti flavor.
