According to Businessweek, Pepsi reformulated soda products sold in California to reduce the amount of 4-MEI, a commonly used coloring agent that the state has ruled is carcinogenic.

The FDA says: “Based on the available information, FDA has no reason to believe that there is any immediate or short-term danger presented by 4-MEI at the levels expected in food from the use of caramel coloring.” Pepsi products sold in the rest of the U.S. will have reduced levels of 4-MEI by early 2014.
