Afaxys announced the wider availability of ella (ulipristal acetate), an emergency contraceptive, after acquiring U.S. marketing rights. ella delays or prevents ovulation for up to five days, which is longer than other oral emergency contraceptive currently available.

ella is a first-of-its-kind progesterone agonist/antagonist contraceptive intended for prevention of pregnancy following unprotected sex or a known or suspected contraceptive failure. The likely primary mechanism of action of ulipristal acetate for emergency contraception is therefore inhibition or delay of ovulation; however, alterations to the endometrium that may affect implantation may also contribute to efficacy.
