HealthDay News — Long naps could raise the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a review presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, held from September 12 to 16 in Munich.

A research team from the University of Tokyo analyzed data on more than 307,237 people included in 21 published studies.

The team found that naps lasting an hour or more were associated with a 45% increased risk for type 2 diabetes. Shorter naps had no effect on diabetes risk, however.

“Longer nap was associated with increased risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome,” the authors write. “Further studies are needed to confirm the efficacy of a short nap.”
