The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced that the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) has submitted recommendations to HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for the 2015 edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The advisory committee’s recommendations are now available online.

In contrast to the 2010 Guidelines, the 2015 DGAC is not recommending that cholesterol intake be limited to no more than 300mg/day due to a lack of evidence supporting the relationship of dietary cholesterol and serum cholesterol. This is consistent with the 2013 guidelines from the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) on lifestyle management to reduce cardiovascular risk. The 2015 DGAC also stated that healthy eating patterns can be achieved with a healthy diet based on U.S. foods, the Mediterranean diet, and a vegetarian diet that are comprised of more than 30% fat.

The HHS and the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) will review the report with input from other federal agencies and public comments as they develop the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2015, which will be released later this year. The public is encouraged to provide written comments online for a period of 45 days after publication in the Federal Register. The public will also have an opportunity to offer oral comments at a public meeting in Bethesda, MD, on March 24, 2015.
