Walmart announced the launch of DisposeRx, a first-of-its-kind opioid disposal solution, available for free at all pharmacy locations.
The unique DisposeRx packets contain a crosslinking polymer blend. When the packet is emptied into a pill bottle with warm water, the ingredients convert powders, pills, tablets, capsules, liquids, or patches into a non-divertible and biodegradable gel. This method provides a way for patients to dispose any remaining medication in their trash at the convenience of their homes.
Walmart patients filling a new Class II opioid prescription will now be given a free DisposeRx packet along with counseling on proper opioid use and safety. Patients taking chronic opioid prescriptions will be offered a DisposeRx packet every 6 months, and existing patients may obtain a free DisposeRx at any time.
Walmart also stocks naloxone in its pharmacies and will offer it for sale behind-the-counter or for dispensing by a pharmacist by the end of January (where laws are applicable).
