Alli is an FDA-approved over-the-counter (OTC) weight loss aid that is indicated in overweight adults as adjunct to a reduced-calorie and low-fat diet. Orlistat is a reversible lipase inhibitor that forms a covalent bond with the active serine residue site of gastric and pancreatic lipases resulting in the inhibition of dietary fat absorption.
Consumers in 7 states reported that bottles of Alli contained tablets and capsules that were not Alli. Tablets and capsules of various shapes and colors were reported to be discovered in the bottles. Further, some bottles inside the outer carton were missing labels and displayed tamper-evident seals that were not authentic.
Consumers should confirm that true Alli bottles contain turquoise blue capsules with a dark blue band imprinted with “60 Orlistat”. The labeled bottle should also have an inner foil seal imprinted with “Sealed for Your Protection”. Those in possession with the affected products are to discontinue use.
