Allergan announced that Refresh Repair Lubricant Eye Drops are now available over-the-counter (OTC) to protect against dry eye and to improve visual clarity.
The Refresh Repair drops are the latest addition to the Company’s Refresh product line. The new ocular drops contain carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) 0.5%, hyaluronic acid (HA), glycerin 0.9%, and other organic osmoprotectants. The osmoprotectants displace salt in the tear film to protect epithelial cells and help maintain the health of the ocular surface.
In a 3-month, multicenter, double-masked, randomized study (N=305), patients who used Refresh Repair reported a -20% and -31% change in combined corneal and conjunctival staining at Day 7 and 90, respectively. Also, there was a 28% and 40% decrease in ocular surface disease index (OSDI) at Day 7 and 90, respectively, among patients who used Refresh Repair. Moreover, there were significant improvements in vision-related functions (eg, reading, nighttime driving), ocular symptoms (eg, grittiness, eye pain), and environmental triggers (eg, windiness, low humidity) as measured by OSDI scores at follow-up visits on Days 7 and 90.
Findings from a visual disturbance questionnaire after a 7-day use of Refresh Repair showed that 70% of patients reported no blur when the drop was first applied, and 85% of patients reported no blur after <5 minutes of application.
“Refresh Repair provides improved comfort for patients with dry eye and unique osmoprotective benefits that safeguard the health of epithelial cells against hyperosmotic stress,” stated Jag Dosanjh, Senior Vice President, Allergan US Eye Care.
Refresh Repair can be used safely with contact lenses and does not require shaking before use. It is supplied as 0.33 floz (10mL) bottles.
