Actavis has reformulated Fioricet (butalbital, acetaminophen, and caffeine) capsules and Fioricet with Codeine (butalbital, acetaminophen, caffeine, and codeine phosphate) capsules.

RELATED: Pain Management Resource Center

The two reformulations contain a new lower acetaminophen dose of 300mg (originally 325mg) after an FDA guideline was issued that limited the acetaminophen dose in all prescription products. The amount of butalbital, caffeine, and codeine have remained the same.

Fioricet and Fioricet with Codeine are both indicated for the relief of the symptom complex of tension (or muscle contraction) headache. Fioricet combines a barbiturate and analgesic, and Fioricet with Codeine combines an opioid with a barbiturate and analgesic.

The dosing regimen for the reformulated products will remain the same as that for the older versions.
