LabCorp announced the launch of a reflex test to detect enterovirus D68 (EV-D68).
The EV-D68 PCR test identifies the presence or absence of enteroviral RNA in a respiratory sample. If determined positive, it reflexes to an EV-D68-specific PCR test. This subtype PCR test allows the detection of the specific D68 strain.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state public health agencies reported the link between EV-D68 and the growing number of pediatric patients with severe respiratory illness starting from August 2014. Currently there are no available vaccines or specific treatments, as even commonly used antivirals have not effectively treated EV-D68. The CDC has since then announced protocols for clinical evaluation, reporting, and treatment of patients suspected or confirmed to be infected with EV-D68.
