The FDA has approved ZymoGenetics‘ Recothrom (recombinant topical thrombin) for use as an aid to hemostasis when oozing blood and minor bleeding from capillaries and small venules is accessible and control of bleeding by standard surgical techniques is ineffective or impractical. Recothrom is a plasma-free, recombinant form of human thrombin and is not derived from animal or human blood. Recothrom is for topical use only and may be used in conjunction with an absorbable gelatin sponge. It is expected to be available by February 2008.
