AdvanDx announced the launch of QuickFISH, a new rapid pathogen identification test for potential life threatening bloodstream infections. The proprietary PNA technology enables identification of Staphylococcus aureus and/or coagulase-negative staphylococci in 20 minutes directly from positive blood cultures – the same time as the reporting of Gram stain results.
Some features of the QuickFISH test include: 5 minutes of hands-on time, 20 minutes of turnaround time, built-in universal controls for confidence in test results, and limited instrumentation and capital investment required. The laboratory is able to report pathogen identification to clinicians with the Critical Value Gram stain result, which indicates a condition likely to have significant medical implications for the patient requiring immediate clinical intervention.
AdvanDx received clearance from the FDA on April 3, 2012. QuickFISH is expected to be available on September 24, 2012. Additional assays for identification of other clinically important microbial species are currently in development for launch in 2012 and 2013.
