Quality Indicators for GI Endoscopic Procedures Updated

The joint American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Task Force on Quality in Endoscopy has issued updated quality indicators for all gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopic procedures and for the four major procedures: colonscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD, or upper endoscopy), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and endoscopic ultransonography (EUS).

The updated quality indicators from 2006 released by the ASGE/ACG Task Force serve as a means to assess, measure, and improve physician performance. The five published titles are as follows:

  • Quality indicators common to all GI endoscopic procedures;
  • Quality Indicators for EGD;
  • Quality Indicators for Colonoscopy;
  • Quality Indicators for ERCP; and
  • Quality Indicators for EUS.

These indicators will assist in patients receiving the appropriate procedure; that correct diagnoses are made or excluded; that therapy is properly performed; and that all these can be achieved with minimum risk to the patient. Three time periods–preprocedure, intraprocedure, and postprocedure–were taken into consideration for each endoscopic procedure.

The quality indicators are published online in GIE: Gastroitestinal Endoscopy and The American Journal of Gastroenterology.
