Sandoz and Pear Therapeutics announced the availability of reSET, the first prescription digital therapeutic for patients with substance use disorder (SUD).
reSET is a 90-day (12-week) digital therapy intended to provide cognitive behavioral therapy in patients aged ≥18 years who are currently enrolled in outpatient treatment under clinician supervision; it should be used in conjunction with outpatient clinician-delivered care. Eligible SUD patients include those who are not currently on opioid replacement therapy, who do not abuse alcohol solely, or who do not abuse opioids as their primary substance of abuse.
The program consists of 62 modules that deliver cognitive behavioral therapy and fluency training to reinforce proficiency. Modules may include: coping with thoughts about substance abuse, recognizing negative thinking, identifying techniques to move to positive thinking, among others. Through reSET, clinicians can track patient-reported substance use, cravings, and triggers. The goals of therapy are to increase abstinence from a patient’s substances of abuse during treatment and to increase retention in the outpatient treatment program.
A multi-site, unblinded, randomized clinical trial evaluated patients (N=399) who received 12 weeks of either treatment as usual (TAU) or reduced TAU supplemented with a desktop version of reSET (rTAU + reSET). The primary outcome measures were abstinence at Weeks 9 to 12, and retention in outpatient therapy. Patients who received reSET, in combination with outpatient therapy and contingency management, had statistically significantly greater odds of remaining abstinent at the end of treatment (odds ratio [OR] 2.22, 95% CI, 1.24, 3.99; P =.0076) and had statistically significant improvement in retention (27.8% dropout; P =.0316) vs outpatient therapy alone (36.5% dropout).
The reSET Connect Patient Service Center has also been launched, providing access to a specialist that can guide patients and clinicians through downloading and using reSET, troubleshooting, and assisting with the patient’s insurance company.
“Adding reSET to outpatient therapy enhances behaviors associated with recovery. It leverages new technology to help patients improve abstinence in substances of abuse and stay in treatment programs longer than outpatient therapy alone,” stated Richard Francis, CEO, Sandoz.
The reSET application is supported on iOS 8.0 and above and Android 4.1 and above mobile operating systems.
