A new systematic review has found that as little as a 28g/day increase in nut intake can reduce the risk of of cardiovascular disease, total cancer and all-cause mortality, and mortality from respiratory disease, diabetes, and infections.
A total of of 20 studies, taken from PubMed and Embase, were included in the analysis. The relative risks per 28g/day increase nut intake were 0.71 for coronary heart disease, 0.93 for stroke, 0.79 for cardiovascular disease, 0.85 for total cancer, 0.78 for all-cause mortality, 0.48 for mortality from respiratory disease, 0.61 for diabetes, 0.65 for neurodegenerative disease, 0.25 for infectious disease, and 0.27 for kidney disease.
The summary relative risks were calculated used random-effects models. The results were similar for tree nuts and peanuts.
