A newly discovered hormone has been shown to restore insulin sensitivity in muscle tissue and could help to counteract diet-induced and age-dependent insulin resistance. This research is described in a new study in the journal Cell Metabolism.
This hormone (MOTS-c) was injected into mice fed a high-fat diet; while this diet typically leads to obesity and insulin resistance, the hormone reversed age-dependent insulin resistance, suppressed weight gain, and normalized metabolism. While these effects are commonly associated with exercising, this discovery could help to identify new treatments for age-related diseases like diabetes.

Although the research has only been conducted on mice thus far, clinical trials in humans could begin within the next three years.
