The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) announced that the general availability for the .pharmacy domain will begin on June 3, 2015 for pharmacies and pharmacy-related entities.
The .pharmacy Top-Level Domain (TLD) was created by the NABP to provide consumers worldwide with a means to clearly identify safe and legal online pharmacies, as well as related resources. Since the .pharmacy TLD was launched in 2014, over 300 .pharmacy domain names that were applied for or requested during prior limited registration periods have been approved by the NABP. However, after reviewing nearly 11,000 websites that sell prescription medication online, the NAPB discovered that 96% do not follow pharmacy laws and standards established to protect the public health. NABP will grant use of the .pharmacy domain only to legitimate website operators that adhere to pharmacy laws in the jurisdictions in which they are based and in which their patients and customers reside to ensure that consumers can find safe online pharmacies.

Approved applicants were eligible to register their domain names as early as May 1, 2015 and applications for the final limited registration period for all dispensing pharmacies are under evaluation. Those who now wish to seek a .pharmacy domain name must first submit an application, supporting documentation, and an application fee to the NABP; after that, the NABP will evaluate the application to ensure compliance with program standards. As well, the content of the proposed website must be available for review by NABP either on an existing website or a staging site. Once approved, applicants may register their desired domain name(s) through one of the NABP’s participating registrars.
