The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) today announced that the source of a recent multistate, Listeria monocytogenes (Listeriosis) outbreak, is packaged salads which came from the Dole processing facility in Springfield, Ohio. Since September last year, the CDC has been conducting a joint investigation with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), after a spate of Listeria illnesses.

In total, 12 people have been hospitalized due to Listeriosis. One person in Michigan died as a result of their infection. The number of ill people reported from each state is as follows: Indiana (1), Massachusetts (1), Michigan (4), New Jersey (1), New York (4), and Pennsylvania (1).  Laboratory test results showed isolates from each infected person to be highly related genetically.

All ill people who were asked about packaged salad reported having eating it in the month before becoming ill. Two of those asked, reported eating various varieties of Dole brand packaging. A subsequent test by the Ohio Department of Agriculture was able to match Listeria isolate from the Dole processing plant, to the genetic isolates from the people who were infected.

Dole has stopped all production at the Springfield, Ohio plant as of January 21st, and they are withdrawing all packaged salads currently on the market that were produced there. The salads produced at the Springfield facility vary in brand, and the CDC is recommending consumers, restaurants and retailers do not eat, serve or sell any of them. The full list includes:

The CDC stated there is no evidence to suggest that salads produced at other Dole processing facilities in the United States are linked to illness.
