The FDA has approved Mirena (levonorgestrel intrauterine system, from Bayer), a hormone-releasing device, for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding in women who use intrauterine contraception as their method of pregnancy prevention.
Mirena is already indicated for intrauterine contraception in women who have had at least one child, and are in a stable, mutually monogamous relationship.
