Intraocular Lens Approved to Correct Vision in Cataract Patients

Abbott announced that the FDA has approved Tecnis Toric 1-piece intraocular lens for the visual correction of aphakia and pre-existing corneal astigmatism. The Tecnis Toric lenses are indicated in adult patients with or without presbyopia in whom a cataractous lens has been removed by phacoemulsification and who desire improved uncorrected distance vision, reduction in residual refractive cylinder, and increased spectacle independence for distance vision.

Unlike conventional intraocular lenses, the Tecnis Toric 1-piece can correct a patient’s loss due to pre-existing corneal astigmatism of >1 diopter. Also, the Tecnis Toric minimizes imprecise light focusing (spherical aberration) to provide sharper distance vision for the patient.

Abbott has already begun shipping the product.
