BD announced that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the BD Intelliport Medication Management System, a management system for manual IV bolus injections.

The Intelliport System is the first system with real-time drug identification, allergy detection before an injection, cumulative dose measurement during an injection, and wireless transmission of information directly to the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR) after administration.

Through the Intelliport System’s unique IV access site sensor powered by a rechargeable, wireless base and touch-screen tablet technology, important medical information is documented automatically. Healthcare workers can have access to smart-injection-site functionality and medication administration information, which may help reduce medication errors.

The Intelliport System is anticipated to launch in the spring of 2015.
