The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a safety statement regarding the new must-have product of the season: hoverboards. Numerous reports of hoverboard-related fires have prompted the agency to investigate the cause of these fires as well as other product-related injuries such as falls.
Currently, there are no safety standards in place for hoverboards, which is concerning given that serious injuries including concussions, fractures, contusions/abrasions, and internal organ injuries have been reported. As of yesterday, the CPSC reports 22 fires in at least 17 states and over 70 ER-treated injuries.
Given the popularity of this product this holiday season, clinicians might expect an influx of hoverboard-related injuries. The CPSC is actively investigating and will alert the public as new information becomes available.
