Watson announced that it has launched Metformin HCl extended-release tablets, the generic version of Shionogi‘s Fortamet.
Fortamet is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise in type 2 diabetes as monotherapy, or with a sulfonylurea or insulin for patients >17 years old. Fortamet, a biguanide, reduces hepatic glucose production and intestinal glucose absorption. It also improves insulin sensitivity and peripheral glucose uptake and utilization.
Metformin HCl tablets are available from Watson in 500mg and 1,000mg dosage strength tablets.
