Generic Zegerid, Zegerid OTC Versions Launched

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Perrigo‘s and Dr. Reddy‘s Omeprazole and Sodium Bicarbonate Capsules, the generic versions of Merck‘s Zegerid OTC and Salix‘s Zegerid capsules, respectively. 

Both Zegerid OTC and Zegerid combine omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), and sodium bicarbonate, an antacid. Zegerid OTC is indicated for the treatment of frequent heartburn occurring ≥2 days per week. Prescription Zegerid is indicated for short-term treatment of active benign gastric ulcer, active duodenal ulcer, erosive esophagitis (EE); symptomatic GERD; and the maintenance of healing of EE. 

Perrigo’s product is available as a 20mg/1100mg strength. Dr. Reddy’s product is available as 20mg/1100mg and 40mg/1100mg strengths in 30-count bottles. Both companies have begun shipment of their products.
