Actavis announced the launch of Lidocaine Topical Patch 5%, the generic version of Endo Pharmaceutical’s Lidoderm.

RELATED: Pain Management Resource Center

Lidoderm is a topical anesthetic indicated for postherpetic neuralgia. Specifically, lidocaine is an amide-type local anesthetic agent.

It is suggested that lidocaine stabilizes neuronal membranes by inhibiting the ionic fluxes required for the initiation and conduction of impulses. The penetration of lidocaine into intact skin after application is sufficient to produce an analgesic effect, but less than the amount necessary to produce a complete sensory block.

Actavis has begun shipping the product.
