FreeStyle blood glucose test strips redesigned

Abbott announced that its redesigned FreeStyle blood glucose test strips have received FDA approval. The new FreeStyle test strips do not use the GDH-PQQ enzyme, which can be affected by common non-glucose sugars (eg, maltose or galactose). The new FreeStyle test strips use a GDH-FAD enzyme which is unaffected by common non-glucose sugars and minimizes the potential for other interference.

The new FreeStyle test strips are compatible with all FreeStyle blood glucose monitoring systems and feature a new, easier-to-use tapered design with ZipWik tabs. The new strips are designed to ensure faster blood application and to reduce the number of error messages and wasted test strips.

FreeStyle test strips are expected to be available in August 2010.
