Free Narcan Nasal Spray Program Expanded to Colleges, Universities

Adapt Pharma announced its expansion of the Free Narcan Nasal Spray for High Schools program to include colleges and universities throughout the country.

The Company will donate 20,000 cartons — providing 40,000 doses — of Narcan Nasal Spray (naloxone HCl) for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdose, as manifested by respiratory and/or central nervous system depression. The program is part of an ongoing collaboration between the Clinton Health Matters Initiative and Adapt Pharma. To date, about 3,300 free doses of Narcan Nasal Spray have been distributed to high schools in 33 states. 

Narcan Nasal Spray antagonizes opioid effects by competing for the same receptor sites. It reverses the effects of opioids, including respiratory depression, sedation, and hypotension. It can also reverse the psychotomimetic and dysphoric effects of agonist-antagonists such as pentazocine. 

Narcan Nasal Spray, launched in February 2016, is available as a ready-to-use, needle-free spray providing 4mg naloxone per spray. The 2mg strength spray was approved in January 2017; plans for commercial launch will be provided at a future date.
