Johnson & Johnson announced the coming launch of Acuvue Oasys with Transitions Light Intelligent Technology, a first-of-its-kind photochromic contact lens that adapts to changing light. The lens was initially cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April 2018.
The FDA based their approval on scientific evidence including a clinical study of 24 patients that evaluated daytime and nighttime driving performance while wearing the contact lenses.
The 2-week reusable contact lens senses lighting conditions. The Company say they help the eyes recover faster from bright light, reducing halos and starbursts at night. Its photochromic technology activates the lens in under 1 minute and fades back within 90 seconds. The Company also claim they are the only contact lenses that provides 100% protection against UVB rays.
“This product will give contact lens wearers a seamless way to manage changing light conditions in their everyday lives and activities, building on our commitment to helping people see better, connect better, and live better,” stated Thomas Swinnen, President, North America at Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc.
Acuvue Oasys with Transitions contact lenses will be available nationwide starting April 1.
