The FDA has proposed a new format for the Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods to highlight changes in nutrition science and food packaging. These updates are intended to align with new dietary recommendations, consensus reports, and national survey data. The last significant label change was the addition of trans fat information in 2006.

Some of the proposed label changes include:

  • Including the amount of “added sugars”
  • Serving sizes that reflect increased consumption trends
  • Columns for “per serving” and “per package” calorie and nutrition information for larger packaged foods 
  • Declaration of potassium and vitamin D
  • Revisions to sodium, dietary fiber, and vitamin D daily values
  • Remove “Calories from Fat”
  • Emphasize calories, serving sizes, and Percent Daily Value

The proposed changes affect all packaged foods except certain meat, poultry, and processed egg products. These recommendations are structured to assist consumers in selecting food choices that support a healthy diet. Research has shown the connection between diet and chronic diseases such as obesity and heart disease, and the FDA hopes that these new labels will help consumers make informed decisions. The FDA is proposing to make appropriate updates to the Supplement Facts label on dietary supplements where applicable.

Public comments will be accepted by the FDA for the next 90 days.
