| The FDA announced that beginning September 2012, it will require larger more prominent cigarette health warnings on all packaging and advertisements.
The new warnings contain nine text warnings and accompanying images to increase awareness of specific health risks associated with smoking (eg, death, lung disease, cancer, stroke, and heart disease), encourage smokers to quit, and empower youth to say no to tobacco.
The FDA expects these warnings to significantly impact public health by decreasing the number of smokers, increasing life expectancy, and lowering medical costs.
