FDA Approves New Group A Strep Molecular Test

Meridian Bioscience, Inc. announced that it has received clearance for a new molecular diagnostic test for Group A Streptococcus on the illumigene platform.

The illumigene Group A Strep test utilizes loop-mediated isothermal DNA amplification (LAMP) technology to detect Streptococcus pyogenes in throat samples. This test takes less than one hour and all reagents and disposables contained in the test kit can be stored at room temperature.

Group A Streptococcus is a bacterium commonly found in the human throat or on skin and causes a variety of diseases in humans, the most common being acute pharyngitis or strep throat. Infections may result in mild illness or may lead to fatal illness such as acute rheumatic fever, cellulitis, bacteremia, or necrotizing fasciitis.
