Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% Acne Treatment (La Roche-Posay) is now available over-the-counter for the treatment of acne vulgaris.
The prescription-strength topical retinoid is indicated for patients aged 12 years and older. The product is oil-free, fragrance-free, and noncomedogenic.
Although the exact mechanism of action of adapalene is unknown, it is suggested that topical adapalene may normalize the differentiation of follicular epithelial cells resulting in decreased microcomedone formation. Patients should be aware that it may take up to 3 months of daily treatment to see results.
Topical application of adapalene has been associated with local cutaneous reactions including erythema, scaling, dryness, and stinging/burning.
Effaclar Adapalene Gel 0.1% is available in 45 gram tubes at stores and online at laroche-posay.us.
