(HealthDay News) – For patients with multilevel lumbar stenosis and single-level degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS), surgical outcomes are not significantly different with decompression and single-level or multilevel fusion, according to a study published in the May 1 issue of Spine.
Yossi Smorgick, MD, from William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI, and colleagues compared surgical outcomes and complications of multilevel decompression and single-level fusion with multilevel decompression and multilevel fusion using results from a multicenter randomized and observational study involving 207 patients with multilevel lumbar stenosis and single-level DS.
Of the patients enrolled in the study, 130 underwent single-level fusion and 77 underwent multilevel fusion. The researchers observed no significant differences between the groups in surgical outcomes. In the multilevel fusion group, operative time and intraoperative blood loss were significantly higher.
“Decompression and single-level fusion and decompression and multilevel fusion provide similar outcomes in patients with multilevel lumbar stenosis and single-level DS,” the authors write.
