(HealthDay News) — In patients without clinical evidence of warts, human papillomavirus type 2 (HPV-2) is associated with pyogenic granuloma, according to a study published online Oct. 22 in the International Journal of Dermatology.

Osvaldo T. Vázquez-Martínez, M.D., from the Hospital Universitario in Monterrey, Mexico, and colleagues examined the presence of HPV DNA in pyogenic granuloma samples by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). They tested 18 pyogenic granuloma biopsies from patients without a clinical history or evidence of verruca in the studied area for the presence of HPV genome. Three independent PCR reactions using standard consensus primer sets were used to screen for the presence of HPV DNA. The HPV DNA-positive samples were genotyped to allow identification of up to 30 HPVs.

The researchers detected HPV DNA in 44.4 percent of the samples, with HPV-2 identified as the only type in all eight HPV DNA-positive samples. They reliably eliminated contamination with HPV-2 sequences throughout the entire process.

“This report is the first to suggest an association between HPV-2 and pyogenic granuloma,” the authors write. “This relationship is similar to that observed between HPV-2 and nongenital warts.”
