At least 28 individuals in Philadelphia have died from a lethal combination of heroin and fentanyl, with test results pending for 7 additional deaths. Fentanyl, an opioid found in prescription pain medications, is indicated for moderate-to-severe chronic pain that requires continuous, around-the-clock opioid analgesia for an extended period of time and cannot be managed by lesser means (eg, NSAIDs, opioid combination products, or immediate-release opioids) in opioid-tolerant patients only. Health officials are working to spread information about the risks of this combination by alerting hospitals and health care providers.
