Shortage of Lead Poisoning Treatment Announced

Chemet is an orally active, heavy metal chelating agent indicated for the treatment of lead poisoning in pediatric patients.

An unexpected disruption in manufacturing has resulted in the interim shortage of Chemet (succimer) 100mg capsule in the US, according to manufacturer Recordati Rare Diseases.

Chemet is an orally active, heavy metal chelating agent indicated for the treatment of lead poisoning in pediatric patients with blood lead levels above 45mcg/dL. The use of Chemet should always be accompanied by identification and removal of the source of the lead exposure. Chemet is not indicated for prophylaxis of lead poisoning in a lead-containing environment.
