Breath Sensor, App Combo Provide Novel Approach to Smoking Cessation

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the Carbon Monoxide Breath Sensor System (Carrot Inc.) for over-the-counter commercial use. The system is Bluetooth-enabled and intended to work with Carrot’s smartphone smoking cessation app, Pivot.

The Carbon Monoxide Breath Sensor System (COBSS) informs the user how breath carbon monoxide levels are affected by their smoking behavior. Smokers can ”use this information to help them in smoking cessation programs,” said David S. Utley, MD, CEO of Carrot Inc.

The Pivot app – instead of immediately focusing the user on quitting and setting a date – approaches cessation with an emphasis initially on creating the motivation to quit. When the user is ready, the app assists them with evidence-based strategies, cognitive behavior therapy, pharmacologic education and in-app human coaching. 

The breath sensor will initially be offered through self-insured U.S. employers to promote healthy workplaces.

And, second, by delivering evidence-based behavioral science strategies directly to the participant via their smartphone.”

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths each year in the U.S.
