The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) has issued their Standards of Care for the Addiction Specialist Physician to emphasize treatment standards for physicians caring for patients with addiction and related disorders.

These Standards define a minimum benchmark for physician performance and are not specific to a particular substance, behavior, or setting involving any addictive substance or behavior. It further states that the Standards apply even if such a physician does not hold specialty certification in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry.

The Standards include the following topics:

  • Assessment and Diagnosis
  • Withdrawal Management
  • Treatment Planning
  • Treatment Management
  • Care Transitions and Care Coordination
  • Continuing Care Management

ASAM is also working on drafting performance measures to assess whether or not standards have been met by physicians to improve addiction treatment and patient outcomes. The Standards have received endorsement from the American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine and are supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
